We need to prepare for a gradual reduction in the use of traditional fuels: oil, gas and coal. To increase energy efficiency. To develop alternative energy. To build appropriate infrastructure. The world economy is aiming at a progressive transition to low-carbon energy, and this is already the new reality.

We all live in the same planet and must bear collective responsibility for its future, while ensuring sufficient conditions for energy development. The Russian Federation, as one of the major energy powers, is aware of its particular responsibility for solving global environmental issues and, above all, the most urgent one of these – containment of climate change.

Russia has already had not just a renewable energy industry, but a comprehensive cluster that includes generation, industry, science and education. Most importantly, Russia’s renewable energy technology cluster needs to be brought to the global market. If Russia’s renewable energy wins its place worldwide, it will mean irreversibility of the process: we will not lose our positions either in 10 or 20–30 years.

A crucial task is to restore the biosphere, and the key to achieving this goal is to introduce nature-like technology that is capable of moving the process forward without causing harm to the surrounding environment. In fact, this is the main strategic challenge facing the international community.

The pandemic has aggravated the debates about the need for the most rapid energy transition – replacement of fossil fuels with renewable energy sources. Falling demand for oil and gas in 2020 generated many predictions about when the hydrocarbon era will end. Yes, we are seeing in real time that the “greening” of the economy is shifting. But will it destroy hydrocarbons, and can green energy get a win over oil and gas? There are more economic aspects here, and we are still just exploring the topic.

Flying of quadcopters [on alternative fuels – Ed.] is already being done abroad. Alternative fuels, such as hydrogen fuel instead of paraffin oil, are being used for the aviation industry. According to some forecasts, planes will be actually able to fly on hydrogen fuel by 2035.

Today, green energy issues are an obligatory part of forum agendas and dialogue between countries all over the world. This concerns all people on the planet because the Earth is our shared home and humanity has no other home yet. The President has repeatedly stressed the need for Russia to transition to carbon-free energy by 2060. It may seem like there is a lot of time, but, in fact, we need to act now. We are glad that the ARWE International Forum will be held in Rostov-on-Don. Our region is doing a lot to develop green energy. And today the Don region is the leader among Russia’s regions in terms of installed wind power generation capacity. I am certain that the event will be held at the highest level.

Today, the climate agenda is not information noise, but something that
is capable of exerting a serious impact and changing business models pursued by major companies and hydrocarbon-producing countries. We are in a situation where actual figures and rates at which global investment is going green are exceeding all the predictions that were voiced. Reviewing strategic programs and focusing investment and incentives on green power will enable Russia to become a prominent player in the global new energy market.

Active development of RES sectors ensures the investments inflow, which in turn results in new technological competencies in the country. Further market development will be enabled by holding B2B venues, such as the Supplier Forum.

The RES industry in Russia today is not about future projects; it’s about those that have already been implemented and carry lots of potential. We see the wind energy sector development leading to investments into related industries, such as composite materials, metallurgy, and others. It is important that RES does not include production only, it also means education, the future of our children.

Ulyanovsk Region has been selected as the hosting region of the event for a reason. Ulyanovsk Region has been the leader in the sphere of developing renewable energy sources. And I do not mean just the new capacities that are launched every year. The ceremonial opening of the second stage of the Ulyanovsk WPS with the capacity of 50 MW has been dedicated to the opening of the Forum. In the next several years another six wind energy parks with the total capacity of more than 200 MW will be added.
